Srinagar: Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi has urged the Government of India to facilitate the safe return of Indian students currently studying in Iran amid the prevailing conflict and uncertainty in the region.
In a letter addressed to Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the Budgam legislator expressed concern over the situation faced by Indian students, many of whom are pursuing MBBS and other professional medical courses in Iranian institutions.
The legislator said the evolving situation in Iran has created anxiety among students who had gone there to pursue higher education, leaving them worried about their safety and future.
He said the extraordinary circumstances require a coordinated and humanitarian response from the Government of India to ensure the safe return of the students.
Mehdi noted that banking and financial services in Iran are largely disrupted under the prevailing conditions, making it difficult for students to receive funds from their families for arranging return travel.
“As a result, many parents are unable to transfer money for travel arrangements, placing students in a difficult situation,” he said while requesting the Centre to arrange travel for the affected students at the earliest.
The MLA said government-facilitated evacuation would help ensure an orderly and secure return while preventing additional financial burden on families already facing distress due to the situation.
He added that such a step would reassure students and their families and reflect the Government of India’s commitment to protecting citizens studying abroad during challenging international circumstances.
Mehdi expressed hope that the Ministry of External Affairs would consider the request urgently and take appropriate measures to facilitate the safe and dignified return of Indian students from Iran. [KNT]
