‘Locals see tunnel as game-changer for economy and employment’
Ganderbal: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the strategically significant Sonamarg Tunnel today, residents in the area expressed hope that the project will boost tourism and create employment opportunities.
The 6.5-km-long tunnel, ensuring all-weather connectivity to the picturesque Sonamarg, is seen as a turning point for the region’s economy.
Locals gathered to catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister told that Sonamarg remains cut off during winters, affecting their livelihoods. “With this tunnel, tourists can visit year-round, and it will revive our businesses,” said Bilal Ahmad, a local from Ganderbal.
Residents also believe the project will address the issue of unemployment. “Many youths here are jobless. The tunnel will promote tourism-related activities, creating jobs for guides, drivers, and local vendors,” said another local.
Tour operators are optimistic about the development. “Sonamarg has immense potential. With better connectivity, we expect a significant rise in tourist numbers,” said Zahid Khan, a tour operator.
Officials earlier stated that the tunnel would reduce travel time and ensure uninterrupted access to Sonamarg even during harsh winters, transforming it into a year-round tourist destination.—(JKNS)
