Rajouri: In response to the mysterious deaths of 17 individuals, including 13 children, Badhal village in Rajouri district of Jammu Kashmir has been declared a containment zone.

The fatalities, which occurred between December 7 and January 19, involved members of three interrelated families, leaving the inhabitants in distress and officials scrambling for answers.

Authorities have sealed the homes of the affected families as part of precautionary measures. The entire area has been divided into three zones to help contain the spread of the yet-to-be-identified illness. Public and private gatherings have been banned, and officials have been assigned to monitor all meals provided to families within the containment zones.

An official told that villagers have been instructed not to draw water from a local spring, which has been flagged as a potential hazard, and have been cautioned against participating in community feasts.

Despite these measures, the source of the illness remains elusive, intensifying concerns among locals and health experts alike.

Doctors suspect that neurotoxins are behind the deaths, given that the brain and nervous system appear to be commonly affected in all cases.

However, despite extensive medical testing, no definitive cause has been established. Dr. Amarjeet Singh Bhatia, Principal, Government Medical College Rajouri, highlighted the challenges in identifying the illness. “Forensic teams from Chandigarh and Lucknow, as well as experts from the Ministry of Home Affairs, are actively working to uncover the source. A common factor in these deaths is the involvement of the brain and damage to the nervous system,” Dr. Bhatia explained.

He also emphasized the difficulty in treating patients once their neurological system is compromised. “Out of nine patients admitted to the college, five have recovered. Preventive CT scans are being conducted, but recovery becomes difficult when the brain is involved,” he noted.

Efforts to raise awareness are underway, with authorities educating residents on precautionary measures, such as avoiding the exchange of food and adhering to hygiene protocols. While the investigation continues, officials remain hopeful that the cause of the mysterious illness will soon be identified, allowing for more effective containment and prevention strategies. [KNT]
