Sopore: To ensure the availability of quality food items and safeguard public health, the Food Safety Department in collaboration with Sopore Police continued its market-checking drive in various parts of Sopore town on Thursday.
During the inspections, officials thoroughly checked shops, eateries, street vendors, and wholesale outlets to verify compliance with food safety standards, hygiene practices, and proper labeling of consumable goods. Several shopkeepers and vendors found selling substandard, unhygienic, or expired food items were fined on the spot, while strict warnings were issued to others to maintain quality and cleanliness.
An official from the Food Safety Department said, “This drive has been launched to protect consumers from adulterated and unsafe food products. We are committed to ensuring that every food item available in the market meets proper quality standards. Action will be taken against anyone found violating the Food Safety and Standards Act.”
The official further added that the department will intensify market inspections in Sopore subdivision in the coming days, with special focus on meat, bakery, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables, as these items are most vulnerable to adulteration and poor hygiene during the ongoing season.
Locals, while appreciating the move, expressed hope that such consistent drives would not only deter unscrupulous traders but also ensure that consumers get safe and hygienic products.
Authorities have also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any violations or sale of substandard items to the concerned department so that timely action can be taken.
The drive is expected to continue in a phased manner, covering both urban and rural markets of Sopore subdivision.
