Sopore: Amid rising concerns of a possible flood situation in north Kashmir, Sopore Police in collaboration with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) carried out an extensive inspection of several flood-prone and low-lying areas of the town on Thursday.

The joint teams visited Maharajpora, Adipora, Ningli Bala, Sher Colony, and nearby other vulnerable areas, where waterlogging is often reported during heavy rains. Officials assessed the current water level in rivers and streams, closely monitoring the flow to detect any alarming rise that could pose a risk to surrounding habitations.

During the visit, police officers and SDRF personnel interacted with local residents, advising them to stay vigilant, avoid unnecessary movement near water bodies, and follow safety guidelines issued by the authorities.

A senior police officer from Sopore, told that, “Our primary objective is to safeguard people’s lives and property. We have intensified surveillance in all sensitive zones. There is absolutely no need to panic; what is needed is caution, cooperation, and timely reporting of any untoward incident.”

The SDRF assured the public that they are fully prepared with modern rescue equipment, trained manpower, and round-the-clock monitoring systems. The force reiterated that if the water level increases beyond the danger mark, swift rescue and relief operations will be launched without delay.

Locals, while expressing relief at the proactive measures, praised the coordinated response of Sopore Police and SDRF. “These visits and advisories give us confidence that the administration is aware of our concerns and is standing by us in this difficult time,” said a resident of Sher Colony.

Meanwhile, authorities have appealed to people to report any signs of flooding or waterlogging immediately to the nearest police station or SDRF control room. Additional teams have been placed on standby, and arrangements are being reviewed to ensure the safety of vulnerable populations, particularly in areas close to the Jhelum river.

The situation continues to be monitored closely, with officials urging calm, preparedness, and community cooperation in tackling any eventuality.
