Srinagar: In a historic move, the Director General of Police (DGP), Jammu and Kashmir, Shri Nalin Prabhat
on Saturday became the first police chief to visit the Lolab Valley in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district — a region once known for militancy and unrest.
This is the first time that such a high-ranking police officer has visited this remote and sensitive area, which lies close to the Line of Control and has faced security challenges for many years.
The DGP’s visit aimed to review the law-and-order situation, assess security arrangements, and boost the morale of local police forces. He was accompanied by senior officers, including SSP Kupwara Ghulam Jeelani Wani.
The visit was also meant to send a clear message — that there will be zero tolerance for militancy and violence and that the administration is serious about ensuring lasting peace in every part of the Union Territory.
Locals welcomed the visit and called it a positive and historic step. Many residents said it was the first time they felt truly seen and heard by top-level officials. People appreciated that the DGP came to the area personally instead of just sending reports or instructions from afar.
Security experts say the visit is important not just for law and order but also to build trust with the local population. They believe such direct contact helps create a feeling of safety and inclusion, especially in areas that have suffered from years of conflict.
