Dhaka: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and left the country on Monday, according to media reports.
As violence escalated, Sheikh Hasina reportedly fled the country. BBC Bangla reported that she is heading to Tripura’s capital, Agartala, in India.
However, there has been no official confirmation regarding Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure from Dhaka.
Reports indicate that the prime minister left the Bangladeshi capital by helicopter with her sister earlier.
The private Jamuna television news channel reported that Sheikh Hasina was forced to quit as prime minister following massive protests against her government over a controversial quota system that reserved 30 percent of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s War of Independence in 1971.
The army chief is expected to address the nation shortly, according to reports.
Earlier, the government ordered a complete internet shutdown as protesters called for a “Long March to Dhaka.” However, a government agency gave a verbal order to resume broadband internet around 1:15 on Monday.
