Anantnag, September 13: A major tragedy struck today in Kokernag when two Army officers and a police officer were killed in the ongoing encounter in Kokernag area of Anantnag district.
The two Army officers included Colonel Manpreet Singh and Major Ashish whereas the police officer was identified as Humayun Bhat, sub district police officer.
Giving details, people privy to the gun fight said that a cordon and search operation was launched yesterday but was suspended during the night. “It resumed this morning after information of presence of militants in a hideout which operation resumed. Once the contact with militants was established, heavy fire fight started in which colonel Singh and others gor critically injured and succumbed,” said a Police officer.
Former Chief Minister and National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah tweeted, “Terrible terrible news from J&K. An army colonel, a major and a J&K Police DYSP gave the ultimate sacrifice in an encounter in Kokernag area of South Kashmir today. DySP Humayan Bhat, Major Ashish Dhonack, and Colonel Manpreet Singh laid down their lives in an encounter with terrorists.
