Gurez: Authorities have ordered the closure of all schools in Gurez Subdivision until March 15 due to heavy snowfall and the risk of avalanches.
According to an official order issued by Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Gurez, Mukhtar Ahmad Ahanger, “In view of the heavy snowfall in Gurez Subdivision, the avalanche threat, and prevailing weather conditions, the movement of students and staff has been severely affected. Considering the safety and well-being of all concerned, it is hereby ordered that all schools in Gurez Subdivision shall remain closed until March 15, 2025.”
The order further directs all heads of institutions to ensure strict compliance with this directive.
Meanwhile, locals of Gurez Valley have expressed their gratitude towards SDM Gurez for this decision. They acknowledged that areas like Tulail, Kurakbal, Nayal, and other higher regions of Gurez valley are prone to avalanches, making school travel dangerous. Additionally, residents said that while the snowfall benefits the agriculture sector, the closure of the Gurez-Bandipora road has caused difficulties in accessing essential supplies, leading to hardships for the local population.
