Srinagar, May 21: The Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference on Thursday alleged that its president and MLA Handwara, Sajad Gani Lone, was placed under house arrest on the 24th death anniversary of his father, veteran separatist leader Abdul Gani Lone.
According to the party, Sajad Lone was prevented from moving out on a day marked by remembrance events for his father, who was assassinated on May 21, 2002, after attending a Hurriyat Conference gathering in Srinagar.
Abdul Gani Lone was shot dead by militants while leaving a rally organised in memory of Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq, who was also killed on the same date in 1990.
In a statement, the People’s Conference criticised the alleged restrictions imposed on its chief, calling the move “undemocratic” and against democratic principles.
The party said such actions hurt public emotions and raise concerns over political freedom and democratic space in Jammu and Kashmir.
