Today i will talk about عطیش commonly known here in valley as (Atish-e-Shirin becasue it is very bitter in taste. let me start by the herbs different names. It is actually an antidote to poison. Few herbs from this family are severely toxic and should be avoided. It is called Atish ( poison) but Shireen ( non toxic) in kashmiri.

KashmiriPatis (پتیس) or PatrisA staple in traditional Kashmiri home remedies.
Hindi/SanskritAtivisha (अतिविषा)Meaning “counters poison” or “supreme antidote.”

Family

Buttercup family.

Botinical name:

Aconitum heterophyllum.

Habitat of this herb:

This herb is grown in kashmir, himachal Pradesh , Skim , Gilgit and Baltistan, It is very much engangered herb , though some claim it is available in abundance in cold regions.

Benefits:

Patrees has bioactive compounds called diterpene alkaloids (such as Atisine and Heterophyllin).

Benefits can be summed up as under:

  1. Powerful Gastrointestinal Aid (Stomach & Gut)
    • Anti-Diarrheal: Studies show it significantly reduces intestinal motility (slowing down the gut) and inhibits fluid accumulation, making it highly effective against diarrhea and loose motions
    • Anti-Emetic: It acts as an anti-emetic, meaning it helps stop vomiting and nausea, particularly in children (
    • Digestive Tonic: It stimulates digestive enzymes, helping to treat dyspepsia (indigestion), bloating, and gas
  2. Anti-Inflammatory & Analgesic (Pain Relief)
    • Research indicates that the root extract possesses significant anti-inflammatory properties, similar in mechanism to some standard non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
    • It is scientifically supported for reducing swelling and pain associated with rheumatism and arthritis
    • it reduces fever and treats malaria.
  3. Antibacterial & Anthelmintic (Fights Infections)
    • Antibacterial: Lab studies (in vitro) have shown it combats specific bacteria like Salmonella typhi (typhoid), Escherichia coli (gut infections), and Staphylococcus aureus.
    • Anthelmintic: It exhibits activity against intestinal worms (parasites), helping to expel them from the digestive tract

How to use:

For Children (The “Rubbing” Method) Dear friends please note patrees is best friend of mothers when because it is given to babies for indigestion and immunity… methed No one is for moms.

  1. put few drops of clean water on stone
  2. rub the patrees on it
  3. thin brownish paste will form
  4. Just wipe this paste with your finger and let the child lick it.
  5. 1 or 2 times a day …. patress has carmative effect and it breaks down gasses or colic ( ) yes when your Baby is starting having teeth, pain is normal and you should use patrees to get relief for your babies.

for adults:

  1. grind few grams in grinder
  2. keep stocked
  3. take half gram and add with milk
  4. add hney if you wish

. For Diarrhea & Stomach Infection (Decoction/Tea)

If you have an upset stomach or diarrhea:

  • Method:
    1. Take 1 cup of water in a pan.
    2. Add a small piece of crushed Patis root (or a pinch of powder).
    3. Add a small piece of Ginger (Adrak).
    4. Boil until the water reduces to half a cup.
    5. Strain and drink it warm.

Risk factor: No serious risk factor when used in low dose as prrscribed by doc. avoid for lactating moms,
