Bandipora, 25 June: As temperatures soar across Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of India, breaking decades-old records, a surge of locals and tourists are flocking to the Gurez Valley of North Kashmir’s Bandipora District.
Located at an elevation of approximately 11,800 feet and accessible via the picturesque Razdan Pass, Gurez Valley offers a refreshing escape with its cool climate and stunning snow-capped mountains.
The valley is around 130 kilometers from Srinagar and 84 kilometers from Bandipora.
This hidden gem, nestled near the Line of Control in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district, is attracting visitors seeking respite from the scorching heat.
According to recent official data, around 500 to 600 tourists visit Gurez Valley daily.

While speaking to media Shreya a female tourist visiting from Rajkot Gujarat was particularly impressed by the stunning scenery and the welcoming nature of the locals.
She said “This place is very beautiful,” she exclaimed, “and the people of Kashmir are very supportive and cooperative.”
She also encourages others to visit Kashmir and experience its beauty for themselves.
Sheya’s experience challenges misconceptions about Kashmir. “Kashmir has turned out to be much different than what we expected,” she revealed. “The people here are incredibly supportive and welcoming, and the tourism industry is thriving.”
Sheya’s message to others is clear: come and experience Kashmir’s natural splendor for yourselves. “This place is breathtakingly beautiful,” she enthused. “A visit to Kashmir is a must-do in one’s lifetime.”
Sumith from Rajkot Gujarat another first-time visitor to Kashmir, echoed Shreya’s sentiments. He praised the friendliness of the locals and the enjoyable experience he had during his visit. “We should visit Kashmir,” he said, “you will enjoy a lot there.”
He recommends a trip to Kashmir, assuring a memorable time for visitors.
Local residents of Gurez celebrate this positive shift, crediting the Indian Army, local communities, and the government for boosting tourism in the region.
However, they emphasize the need for a dedicated development authority to further improve Gurez’s infrastructure. It would ensure the valley’s sustainable growth and cater to the increasing number of visitors.
The rising popularity of Gurez Valley highlights Kashmir’s potential as a well-rounded tourist destination, showcasing not only its scenic beauty but also its rich cultural heritage and warm people, offering stunning scenery, rich cultural heritage, and friendly people.
Last year’s connection of Gurez Valley to the electricity grid marked a significant milestone, bringing much-needed relief to the locals. Previously, they relied on diesel generators for electricity, which was limited and unreliable.
The grid connection ensures a more stable and sufficient power supply, which is crucial for the valley’s development, including tourism.
