Srinagar: At a time when government employment continues to dominate career aspirations in Kashmir, a young woman from Bijbehara in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district is carving a different path—one that blends passion, innovation, and self-reliance.
Shamsun Nissa, a postgraduate in Botany, has ventured beyond her academic discipline to establish her own bakery brand, “Cakes and Brews.” What began as an idea has quickly transformed into a promising business, gaining traction among locals within just a few weeks of its launch in February 2026.
Her initiative reflects a broader shift among educated youth in the region, who are increasingly exploring entrepreneurship as a viable and rewarding alternative to traditional job roles.
Speaking about her motivation, Shamsun said she aimed to challenge the notion that premium quality products must always come with a hefty price tag. Her bakery focuses on delivering high-quality items at reasonable prices, making them accessible to a wider section of society.
Despite her academic background in science, she embraced the uncertainties of a completely different field. Her journey highlights the growing confidence among young Kashmiris to step outside conventional career frameworks and pursue independent ventures.
The response to “Cakes and Brews” has been encouraging, with customers appreciating both the quality and affordability of its offerings. Shamsun attributes this early success to consistency, attention to customer preferences, and a commitment to excellence.
Encouraged by this momentum, she is already planning to expand. Her upcoming project, “The Lounge by Cakes and Brews,” is set to be a premium coffee and ice cream outlet in Zirpora, Bijbehara. The space is envisioned as a modern hangout spot catering to both youth and families.
Beyond business growth, Shamsun remains committed to inspiring others—particularly women and unemployed youth—to explore entrepreneurship.
She believes that career success is not limited to securing jobs, but also lies in creating opportunities for others. According to her, entrepreneurship fosters independence while also contributing to the local economy through employment generation.
Her message to educated women is clear: step forward, take initiative, and break traditional barriers. With determination and vision, she says, success is within reach.
Shamsun Nissa’s journey stands as a reminder that innovation often begins with the courage to take the first step, an example that may inspire many more in Kashmir to rethink their career paths.
