Several key European nations, including France, Italy, and Spain, have reportedly resisted pressure from former US President Donald Trump to support Washington’s military stance against Iran, as tensions continue to escalate into the fifth week.
Spain earlier announced the closure of its airspace to US aircraft allegedly involved in operations targeting Iran, a move that reportedly drew sharp criticism from Trump, who labeled some NATO allies as “cowards.”
According to international media reports, France has also declined requests to allow Israeli aircraft carrying US-supplied weapons to pass through its airspace. The decision, reportedly taken over the weekend, reflects growing reluctance among European nations to get directly involved in the conflict.
Italy, too, has taken a similar position. Reports indicate that Rome denied permission for US military aircraft to land at the Sigonella Air Base in Sicily, which was expected to serve as a transit point for operations in West Asia.
Meanwhile, Poland has clarified that it has no plans to relocate its Patriot missile systems to support US efforts, despite earlier speculation. Portugal has also adopted a cautious approach regarding the use of its Lajes Air Base in the Azores by American forces.
The reported refusals from European countries could complicate US military logistics, as restricted access to southern European airspace would force longer routes for aircraft heading towards the Persian Gulf, increasing operational strain and refueling requirements.
The developments come amid continued pressure from Washington on NATO allies to extend support in the ongoing crisis. However, multiple European governments appear hesitant to deepen their involvement, particularly in light of rising regional tensions and strategic risks.
Reports further suggest that discussions are underway within US leadership circles regarding a possible conclusion to the conflict, even as key strategic routes such as the Strait of Hormuz remain impacted.
The situation remains fluid, with diplomatic and military dynamics evolving across multiple fronts.
