8 key points to understand the Ranveer Allahbadia and India’s Got Latent controversy

What did Ranveer Allahbadia say on India’s Got Latent?

Ranveer Allahbadia, aka BeerBiceps, sparked controversy with his crude remark while appearing as a panelist on the show. He asked a contestant, “Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once to make it stop forever?”

Political reactions

Weighing in on the controversy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday hinted at possible action against the YouTuber, stating:

“I have come to know about it. I have not seen it yet. Things have been said and presented in the wrong way. Everyone has freedom of speech, but our freedom ends when we encroach upon the freedom of others… In our society, we have made some rules. If someone violates them, it is absolutely wrong, and action should be taken against them.”

FIR filed against India’s Got Latent’s panelists

On Monday, Assam Police registered an FIR against Ranveer Allahbadia, Samay Raina, and Ashish Chanchlani over ‘obscene’ remarks made on India’s Got Latent. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the development on X. The FIR also includes Apoorva Makhija and Jaspreet Singh, who were part of the show.

Ranveer Allahbadia issues public apology

Amid the uproar, Ranveer Allahbadia released an apology video, admitting his mistake, “My comment was not just inappropriate; it was not even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I am just here to say sorry. Many of you asked if this is how I wished to use my platform, and obviously, this is not how I wish to use it. I am not going to provide any context, justification, or reasoning behind whatever happened. I am just here to apologise. I personally had a lapse in judgment. It was not cool on my part.”

He further added, “The podcast is watched by people of all ages. I don’t want to be the kind of person who takes that responsibility lightly. Family is the last thing I would ever disrespect. I need to use this platform better. That has been my learning from this whole experience. I promise to get better.”

Priyanka Chaturvedi to raise the issue in Parliament

Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi (Shiv Sena UBT) plans to bring the issue before the Parliamentary panel of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Chaturvedi stated that abusive language disguised as comedy is unacceptable.

“Any abusive language in the name of comedy crosses limits and is not acceptable. You get a platform, but that doesn’t mean you can say anything. He is someone with millions of subscribers; every politician has sat on his podcast. The Prime Minister has given him an award… As a member of the standing committee of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, I will raise this issue,” she said on X.

B Praak cancels appearance on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast

Singer B Praak took to Instagram to voice his disappointment, strongly criticizing the content on India’s Got Latent. He revealed that he was set to appear on BeerBiceps’ podcast but cancelled, calling out the show’s “pathetic thinking” and offensive language.

AICWA calls for a ban on Samay Raina’s show

The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has issued a press statement demanding strict action against the duo and calling for an immediate ban on the show to prevent the spread of harmful content.

In an official statement on X, AICWA wrote: “The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) vehemently condemns the reprehensible and offensive remarks made on the YouTube show India’s Got Latent, hosted by Samay Raina. In a recent episode, Ranveer Allahbadia, who participated in the show, unleashed abhorrent and vile statements that are deeply disrespectful to our societal and family values. Such disgraceful content is utterly unacceptable and poses a significant threat to the moral fabric of our society.”

YouTube removes India’s Got Latent controversial episode

Amid widespread backlash, the controversial episode of India’s Got Latent has been removed from YouTube. Kanchan Gupta, Senior Advisor at the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, confirmed the removal in a post on X, “The ‘India Has Latent’ episode on @YouTube with obscene and perverse comments by Ranveer Allahbadia has been blocked following Government of India orders.”
