Washington, June 1: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Israel will not launch an attack on Beirut following what he described as productive discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and representatives of Hezbollah.
In a statement, Trump said that no Israeli troops would enter Beirut and that any forces already moving toward the Lebanese capital had been ordered to turn back. He further claimed that Hezbollah had agreed to halt its attacks on Israel, while Israel would refrain from striking Hezbollah targets in Beirut.
The announcement comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, with fears growing that the conflict could expand into a wider regional confrontation involving Iran and Lebanon. Trump described his conversations with both sides as constructive and said the understanding reached would help prevent further escalation.
Political observers say the development could have significant implications for Israeli domestic politics. Israel has often maintained a hardline stance after issuing military warnings or evacuation orders, and any perceived retreat from planned operations may trigger criticism from opposition figures and sections of the Israeli public.
Neither Israeli officials nor Hezbollah have immediately issued detailed statements confirming the full scope of Trump’s announcement. However, reports indicate that diplomatic efforts are underway to secure a broader ceasefire and prevent further violence along the Israel-Lebanon border.
