Sydney, Dec 15: A Sydney fruit vendor has been hailed a hero after disarming one of the gunmen during the deadly Bondi Beach shooting, drawing global attention and nearly $1 million in public donations.
Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, a father of two and long-time Sydney resident, confronted the shooter calmly, seizing his shotgun and preventing further casualties, eyewitnesses reported.
Moments before taking action, Ahmed told his cousin that he might not survive, asking him to inform the family he had tried to save lives amid the chaos.
The courageous act occurred as gunfire erupted near the crowded beach, leaving at least 16 people dead and dozens more wounded, authorities confirmed.

Ahmed was injured during the confrontation and is currently undergoing surgery, while videos of his bravery have circulated widely on social media and international news outlets.
Officials, including the Premier of New South Wales, praised Ahmed’s heroism, saying his intervention likely prevented additional fatalities and changed the course of the tragedy.
