Budgam: Member of Parliament Aga Ruhullah Mehdi on Saturday extended an invitation to government representatives to be part of a proposed protest against what he termed as the Lieutenant Governor, referring to the LG as a “Viceroy,” if the elected government claims that the reservation issue lies entirely with him.
Speaking to reporters during an Awami Darbar at Khansahib in Budgam district, Ruhullah said he will not allow agitating students to feel isolated and will raise their issue at every forum. He said if the government takes the position that it has no role in the reservation matter and that the file rests solely with the LG, then he is prepared to protest against the “Viceroy” as well.
Ruhullah said the venue of the protest will be decided by the students themselves and wherever they choose to sit in protest, he will join them there. He said his demand before the authorities is simple, that the government must engage with the students and take them into confidence over the pending decision on reservation.
He urged the authorities to speak to the students and inform them about what decisions have been taken so far and the current status of the file. He said if certain aspects fall under the oath of secrecy, those details need not be disclosed, but students must at least be informed about the progress of the process.
Expressing concern over repeated notifications and delays, the MP said these have caused deep disappointment among students. He said if the government cannot even communicate with them, then he will ensure that students are not left alone and will extend full support to their protest.
Ruhullah said there were still a few hours left for the authorities to show empathy. If the government has even a little concern for the students, it should call them for talks, explain where the matter stands, and clarify what steps, if any, have been taken, he added. [KNT]
