Srinagar: People’s Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday said Iran had shown “courage” in the ongoing conflict and asserted that Pakistan played a role in preventing a wider war, while dismissing remarks linking recent developments to a political “setback” for India.

Addressing media persons, Mufti said the Muslim community had been in distress due to what she described as strikes by the United States and Israel, adding that the situation improved after Iran’s response led to negotiations.

“The Muslim community was in distress due to the brutal strikes of Israel and the US. Thank God Iran forced the US to bow down and its child Israel, and both countries were forced to negotiate, and it is good for Muslims,” she said.

Mufti said Pakistan had played a key role in the situation and credited it with helping avert a full-scale conflict in the region.

“Pakistan played a key role and it saved whole region from the full-fledged war,” she added.

She alleged that the United States and Israel had caused civilian casualties, including children, and targeted institutions, while asserting that Iran did not direct its actions toward civilians.

“US and Israel let loose a reign of terror and killed civilians including children, attacked educational institutes but Iran didn’t target civilians,” Mufti said, adding that Iran was “praise worthy” and expressing support for the country.

Her remarks come amid heightened regional tensions and competing narratives over the conduct and consequences of military actions, with international responses continuing to evolve.

She further said Pakistan’s role in the situation was “praiseworthy” and maintained that such a role was not adverse to India, expressing hope that both countries could engage in dialogue to resolve differences.

“The way Pakistan played the role is praiseworthy and this role is not adverse for India. I hope in future India and Pakistan will sit together and sort out difference and resolve all issues,” Mufti said.

Mehbooba Mufti also addressed the recent encounter in Ganderbal, stating that such actions have no place in a democratic framework.

“On Ganderbal encounter, she said there is no role in democracy for such actions,” she said. [KNT]
