Budgam: Budgam witnessed a strong public protest on Monday as residents of Pallar Mohalla staged a demonstration at Wani Mohalla against the installation of smart electricity meters. A large number of women participated in the protest, expressing serious concern and resentment over the move.
The protesting women raised slogans and stated that the installation of smart meters would place an additional financial burden on poor and middle-class households. They pointed out that despite repeated assurances, the area continues to face prolonged and frequent power outages, causing severe hardship for residents, especially during the harsh winter months.
Addressing the gathering, speakers said that residents are already suffering due to inadequate power supply, with electricity being provided for barely around two hours during winters. They asserted,
“Imposing smart meters on the public without ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply is unacceptable.”
The protesters demanded an immediate halt to the installation of smart meters in the area and appealed to the concerned departments to first ensure regular and adequate power supply. They warned that if their demands are not met, the agitation would be intensified in the coming days.
The protest concluded peacefully, with participants urging the administration to take the issue seriously and address the genuine problems faced by the people of Budgam at the earliest.
