Washington: A wave of deaths and unexplained disappearances involving at least ten prominent US scientists and researchers has triggered alarm in Washington, prompting an official investigation ordered by Donald Trump.
The individuals reportedly had access to sensitive information related to aerospace, defence, and Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs), adding to concerns about possible links between the cases.
According to US media reports, the incidents date back to July 2023, when physicist Michael David Hicks from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory passed away under undisclosed circumstances. Since then, several other scientists and researchers have either died suddenly or vanished without a trace.
Among the most concerning cases highlighted by Eric Burlison, a member of the House Oversight Committee, is the disappearance of Air Force Major General William McCasland earlier this year. Burlison claimed the incidents appear “too coincidental” and suggested potential links to classified research, possibly involving foreign actors.
“I think this needs a full-scale investigation by agencies like the FBI,” Burlison said in a media interview, stressing the seriousness of the situation.
The White House confirmed that authorities are actively reviewing all cases. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that multiple agencies, including federal investigators, are working together to identify any common patterns or connections.
Cases under scrutiny include the disappearance of researcher Jason Thomas in December 2025, whose body was later recovered in March 2026, and the killing of MIT professor and nuclear physicist Nuno Loureiro near Boston the same month. Other incidents involve missing personnel from Los Alamos National Laboratory and NASA-affiliated scientists, as well as sudden deaths of researchers linked to high-level scientific work.
President Trump described the situation as “pretty serious,” acknowledging that several of those involved were “very important people.” While he expressed hope that the incidents are unrelated, he confirmed that more details are expected in the coming days as the probe progresses.
The developments have sparked debate in political and scientific circles, with questions being raised about national security, researcher safety, and the possibility of a broader pattern behind the incidents.
