Srinagar: The historic Wantpora Spring in downtown Srinagar has shown visible signs of revival following sustained restoration efforts, with a fresh cleaning drive carried out by the Nigeen Lake Conservation Organization.

The spring, which had long suffered from neglect, encroachments and pollution, was restored last year as part of a broader initiative aimed at rejuvenating traditional water sources across the Valley. Today the volunteers of the Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation, led by Chairman Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo, undertook a comprehensive cleaning operation to remove accumulated waste and restore the water body’s natural flow.

Eyewitnesses said members of the organization manually cleared sludge, algae and floating debris from the spring, ensuring that the water source remains functional and free from contamination. Locals in the area welcomed the effort, stating that the spring holds both ecological and cultural significance for the community.

The Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation is an environmental group in Kashmir focused on the restoration and preservation of lakes and springs, including Nigeen Lake, Gilsar and Khushalsar. Over the years, the organisation has been actively engaged in conservation campaigns, awareness programmes and on-ground clean-up operations to combat environmental degradation.

People associated with the initiative reiterated their commitment to safeguarding heritage water bodies and urged inhabitants to refrain from dumping waste into natural springs and lakes.

The revival of Wantpora Spring is being seen as a positive step towards restoring Srinagar’s fragile aquatic ecosystem. [KNT]
