Bangladesh election results: BNP thanks India, hopes for stronger bilateral ties

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won an overwhelming two-thirds majority on Friday (February 13, 2026) in general elections, a result expected to bring stability ‌after months of tumult following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a Gen Z-led uprising in 2024.

Latest counts gave the BNP and its allies at least 212 of the 299 seats up for grabs, domestic TV channels said. The opposition Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies won 70 seats in the Jatiya Sangsad, or House of the Nation.

The Election Commission put the BNP at 181 ‌seats, the Jamaat-e-Islami at 61 and others at 7, with full official results not expected before noon (0600 GMT) on Friday (February 13, 2026).

Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami said on Friday (February 13, 2026) that it had “serious questions about the integrity of the results process”, a day after elections in which their rivals claimed a resounding victory.

BNP thanks India, hopes for stronger bilateral ties

The BNP on Friday thanked India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for recognising the verdict of Bangladesh’s general elections and hoped that the relations between the two countries will be strengthened under the new government.

Speaking to PTI videos, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) standing committee member and chief coordinator for the 2026 election Nazrul Islam Khan said the party appreciated Modi’s recognition of the people’s verdict.

“We thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for congratulating our leader, Tarique Rahman. It is great that a democratic country is supposed to recognise the verdict of the people, and Mr Narendra Modi has done this. We thank him,” he said.

“We, also on behalf of our party, thank him, and we believe that under the leadership of our leader, Mr Tarique Rahman, the relation between these two countries and the people of these two countries will be strengthened,” he added.

Bangladesh’s BNP wins sweeping election majority, promise of stability

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won an overwhelming two-thirds majority on Friday in general elections, a result expected to bring stability ‌after months of tumult following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a Gen Z-led uprising in 2024.

Pakistan’s top leadership congratulates BNP on Bangladesh polls victory

Pakistan’s top political leadership on Friday (February 13, 2026) congratulated the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its leader, Tarique Rahman, on securing a landslide majority in the parliamentary elections.

President Asif Ali Zardari in a statement congratulated the people of Bangladesh on the successful conduct of the polls across 299 seats with the participation of over 127 million registered voters, reported Radio Pakistan.

Reaffirming Islamabad’s support for the sovereignty and democratic aspirations of Bangladesh, he said Pakistan “looks forward to working with the new government to strengthen cooperation in trade, defence, cultural exchanges and regional forums”.

He expressed the hope that the new political environment in Dhaka would contribute to more balanced, independent and mutually respectful engagement across the region, offering his best wishes for the continued stability, progress and prosperity of Bangladesh.

The BNP was in power last time between 2001 and 2006 when Jamaat was its crucial partner, with two of its leaders serving as ministers. — PTI

‘Serious questions’ about integrity of election results, says Jamaat-e-Islami

Bangladesh’s largest Islamist party said on Friday (February 13, 2026) that it had “serious questions about the integrity of the results process”, a day after elections in which their rivals claimed a resounding victory.

“We are not satisfied with the process surrounding the election results,” Jamaat-e-Islami said in a statement. Official results are yet to be released, and the party urged “everyone to remain patient”. — AFP

Mallikarjun Kharge congratulates Tarique Rahman on his victory in Bangladesh polls

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday congratulated BNP leader Tarique Rahman on the party’s victory in the recently held elections in Bangladesh. 

In a post on X, Mr. Kharge said on behalf of the Indian National Congress, I congratulate Mr. Tarique Rahman and the BNP for winning the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.

“India and Bangladesh share deep-rooted bonds of history, language, culture, and multitude of other commonalities. A democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh would always be supported by all Indians for the stability and peace of our region,” the Congress president added in the post.
